All you have to do is close your eyes, and you can hear Davis yell out for a "Bread 4", as you wait for the lasagna in a bowl. And though you can no longer order a double gambler and salad w/house (if you have to ask, this shirt is not for you); you can still go back to the days, when "The Rat", an institution in Chapel Hill for nearly 60 years, was a must eat! In this shirt you're only a thought away from a Tuesday night Spaghetti Special, with sweet tea of course!! ...And we'll tell Preacher you said "hello".

My huband and I ate there every Friday night. And continued to after I finished grad school in 1973 and we were both working in the area. Didn't make it back to visit Chapel Hill for 25 years and we sure looked for it then. The shirt would make a nice surprise gift.

This was one of the few places we could afford. Went first during orientation as a freshmen, took my orientees, went with future husband and then, on those special days in the fall, we took our kids. Very disappointed when they disappeared. Hopefully, when reopened the "special-nous" will remain. Hey, no one can forget that you often had "critters" joining you for a meal.

i go back to the 50's when i had my first rare roast beef sandwich. over the years i would fly into rdu, rent a car, drive to the rat and stuff myself with as many gamblers as i could handle knowing it might be a year or more until i returned. sad day when the rat went the way of its little cousin the zoom zoom room.

I loved the Rathskellar! I remember going there when my aunt was at UNC in the early 90s, then going back with friends when I was at UNC a few years ago. It was a great establishment, and I was really sad to see it have to close. We will miss you skellar of rath!
